Challenge – Large-Scale Cross-Country Relocation
When Tata Chemicals of North America received executive orders to move their headquarters from New Jersey to Utah, they needed to find a way to do it with as little disruption as possible.
They weren’t sure they could move their considerable-sized data center 2000 miles across the country within the projected 6-month timeframe. The team researched other, larger IaaS providers but found hidden fees and complicated plans that would involve more system resources and IT outsourcing.
Ultimately, they chose to partner with IT Vortex, which fostered clear communication, a simple, custom migration process, and straightforward, transparent pricing.
The Tata IT team was convinced that IT Vortex could seamlessly lift and shift their virtual servers and decouple the New Jersey IT data center and infrastructure from the operations they were leaving behind.
Solution – Cloud Hosting with Zero Service Interruptions
During the onboarding process, Tata received a detailed plan for the relocation. The first step was to migrate Tata’s servers into the hosted cloud.
Tata was nervous about possible failure and data loss but the IT Vortex team explained that they could end and/or reverse the process, at any time, if the need arose. Tata had concerns about downtime during maintenance. These were addressed with flexible, after-hours migration but, in fact, no downtime occurred. Tata retained full control of the project, calling all the shots, while IT Vortex handled each step smoothly.
In New Jersey, they successfully migrated Tata’s servers to the IT Vortex cloud infrastructure and gracefully terminated onsite services with no interruption to remaining business operations.
Next, Tata was able to set up new VPN and MPLS connections from existing offices around the world as well as the new Utah Headquarters, prior to the move. The corporation never missed a beat in its line of business operations and processes.
Tata partnered with IT Vortex in April of 2017 and finished the project in June, well exceeding the company’s timeline.
Results – 100% Business Continuity Increased Performance
Tata profited from their move to the IT Vortex cloud, in the way they’d hoped, by keeping their systems online during their cross-country move. They also received unintended benefits after the process was complete.
Before the relocation, much of the New Jersey equipment was nearing the end of life, and the older hardware was beginning to show signs of diminished performance. After the migration, using new hardware in the IT Vortex data centers, Tata immediately experienced 3-4 times increased performance speed across the virtual system.
Still in the cloud several years later, they’ve realized tremendous hardware savings without the need to upgrade physical systems. Investing in IaaS has drastically reduced the cost of large IT capital expenditures, maintenance costs, and IT services.
Paying only for the resources it needs, when it needs them, allows the company to operate with a predictable IT budget, so they can allocate funds and professional resources to other priorities within the corporation.
